TRANSFORMING CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES
Digital commerce re-imagined
MIGRATING FROM MAGENTO
You may have seen a new notification in your Magento admin panel titled "Magenta Open Source 1 software security patches thru June 2020", where Magento announced the date support for Magento 1 will finally cease.
It's a really big deal for company's running Magento Community and Enterprise editions, because running unsupported software is really risky, particularly when the software that isn't being supported forms such a fundamental part of your digital operation.
That's the main reason we recommend moving to Magento 2 in good time. Magento 2 offers a huge leap forward in flexibility and functionality over its predecessor, with an expanded and improved core code which translates into an incredibly smooth experience for customers. A 2-step checkout process is much simpler too, which customers totally love.
Moving from M1 to M2 requires a careful, considered approach, but 247 Commerce has the experience and expertise to help simplify the process for you.
UPGRADING FROM ANOTHER PLATFORM
Many retailers are nervous about changing the software that underpins their store, and for good reason. A small glitch in digital operations can see an online store slow down or - worse - experience a serious outage.
If you're thinking of switching or upgrading your platform, you should take a look behind the scenes of Magento 2. A new simplified navigation, reinvented dashboards and segmented databases make Magento 2 as enjoyable for back-end users as it is for your customers.
The platform now offers significantly faster load speeds, a responsive front-end, frictionless checkout capabilities, easier integrations and much more.
Moving from Shopify, BigCommerce or any other platform to Magento 2 is not unfortunately a one-click operation; it involves changing database structures, themes, and working with new API's. But expertly planned and managed, what looks like a daunting task can be a seamless and trouble-free process.
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWEREDThese are the questions we're most frequently asked, but if you'd like to speak with a specialist, call us on 0208 940 7011.
- DO I REALLY NEED TO UPGRADE TO MAGENTO 2?
The simple answer is no, but we strongly advise starting to plan for it before June 2020.
Just as there may be some old computers sat in the corner of offices running Windows 7 or Windows XP that are not supported by Microsoft any more, its the same with Magento 1. Initially, Magento 1's 'end of life' was announced for November 2018 but that has since been revised with an updated Magento 1 End of Life of June 2020.
Magento also announced that they will only be releasing security patches for the Magento 1 product from now on as their full focus and investment moves to Magento 2.
Your decision to move to Magento 2 will come down to a number of factors – your appetite or aversion to risk, your budgets, and perhaps most importantly, how your site is performing for you right now. If you’re looking at a site redesign or some larger work on your site, it may make sense to make a bigger move to Magento 2 at the same time.
- WHAT ABOUT MY EXISTING DESIGN, FUNCTIONS AND DATA?
It's your choice, if you want to bring your design, functionality and data across.
Migrating your site isn't just about code and data. There's a lot of intrinsic knowledge and learning tied up in your existing platform. Perhaps you've spent years perfecting a logistics process that now works – all that knowledge should also be transferred across to the Magento 2 platfom implemetation.
If you like your design, bring it across. Every line of code will be rewritten but if you have a design in place that you want to keep, then time can be saved taking designs and some key CSS across to the new platform.
The same applies with functionality. Existing concepts, processes and workflows can be migrated. If an extension was used to provide some functionality, a like-for-like extension may already be available, or we'll build the functionality from scratch.
Data migration is a little easier these days, as Magento provide data migration tools that will bring across customers, CMS, orders and product data.
- HOW LONG DO M2 MIGRATIONS TAKE?
There's no straightforward answer to this, but only because it depends on so many things.
Like what you have in place already, what is moving across or being changed during the migration, and how complex the existing site functionality and design is. For a very ballpark estimate, an M2 migration may take anywhere from 16 weeks for relatively straightforward requirements to 9 months for larger, more complex integrations and a high degree of front and back-end customisation.
- CAN I GET A GET A DEMO OF MAGENTO 2?

If you'd like to have a look behind-the-scenes, we have Magento 2 Open Source and Magento 2 Commerce installed so we can walk you through demo sites, show you the most important functions, and explain unique features and differences. A Magento 2 migration involves 4 core components:
When deciding to move your store to Magento 2, it’s important to develop a robust migration plan detailing how and when planned action is to be taken during the process to ensure the migration runs smoothly.
PLANNING YOUR MIGRATION
247 Commerce and Magento recommend planning for the following steps for the migration
Step 1: Review Extensions on your Current Site
Take a look at the existing extensions plugged in to your current Magento 1 site and determine which are needed or need to be replaced for the new store. Also, check that existing extensions are available from the Magento marketplace developed for Magento 2.
Bear in mind too, that this represents a good opportunity to remove redundant and unnecessary data from your Magento 1 site, so make plans for this, as required.
Step 2: Plan your Capacity
Find out if you need more advanced functionality in your Magento store, or will need it in future? This is an ideal time to assess potentially longer-term requirements, where Magento’s flexibility and power become a strategic asset.
Step 3: Build and Test Magento 2
Firstly, you’ll need to install Magento 2 and set up your new store with a similar design and topology to your Magento 1 store.
Step 4: Start the Migration
We recommend that you stop all Magento 1 cron jobs and almost all activity on your Magento 1 admin panel except for order management functions. We also recommend migrating data from a replicated Magento 1 database instance. After re-indexing, you’ll need to thoroughly test the Magento 2 site to make sure there aren’t any issues to resolve before going live.
Step 5: Update Incremental Data
Before launching your new site, you’ll need to capture and move data updates such as new orders, reviews and changes in customer profiles to the Magento 2 store.
Step 6: Go Live
Finally, your store may experience a small period of downtime (a few minutes according to Magento) to reindex and change DNS settings before going live.
